Kogo is a contemporary art gallery that opened at The Widget Factory in Tartu in the spring of 2018, and is aimed at improving the international visibility of artists and introducing their art practice more broadly.

At the centre of Kogo’s diverse exhibition programme are artists’ solo projects and exhibitions created in collaboration with artists and curators. Kogo is committed to supporting free creative expression, interdisciplinarity, imagination and innovative ideas in art, as well as initiating and maintaining creative relationships and uniting the community of artists and art enthusiasts.

We consider it important to encourage dialogue through contemporary art in order to promote discussion on issues that are relevant in society. We have organised various events to accompany the exhibitions held at Kogo gallery, including artist talks, lectures, guided tours, screenings, concerts, book presentations and art performances, involving physicists, philosophers, environmental activists, legal experts, ethnologists, writers, musicians, performers etc.

The public exhibition and audience programme is organised by Kogo Galerii MTÜ. In addition to activities aimed at the public, Kogo Gallery has a mission in promoting the collection of art and bringing artists to the international market. This work is coordinated by Galerii Kogo OÜ. Official information on both organisations can be accessed through the e-Business Register.

The name of Kogo Gallery comes from the Võru language and means “all of”, “together” or “collection”. For us, Kogo means collecting, experiencing and coming together as a community.

PROCEDURE FOR PLANNING THE PROGRAMME
The gallery’s exhibition and audience programme is coordinated by the gallery’s curators, who schedule it one year in advance. As there are only 6–7 exhibitions a year, all of them are carefully selected. The programme for each year is announced in January.

The programme is mainly created by making direct proposals to artists and curators, but also through open calls, which allow us to find international collaborative projects and include young artists. The gallery is also open to proposals that are conceptually and technically well considered and site-specific.

Kogo Gallery fully produces its own exhibition and audience programme, covering all expenses involved in the process. The gallery concludes agreements with artists and curators that regulate the rights and obligations of the parties.

The gallery operates 54 m2 of exhibition space located on the court side of the ground floor of the Widget Factory and is open four days a week. Every now and again, the exhibitions and events held at Kogo Gallery are extended to involve the courtyard area, and the gallery cooperates with the Widget Factory and its other residents. In 2020, the gallery initiated the event series “Gallery Night”, which included all the galleries at the Widget Factory.
