Anna Malicka
Anna Malicka (b. 1995, Riga, Latvia) is an artist based in Riga who works across drawing, textiles, installation, text and audiovisual media. Her practice centres on handicraft, creating tactile, imaginary spaces that explore the untamed and unconscious – her chaotic “I” – through scribbled texts, embroideries and upholstered surfaces. She blends Latvian folk embroidery traditions with camp aesthetics and a street-inflected attitude, producing work that is intimate, rebellious and richly layered.
Malicka holds a BA from the audiovisual department Motion. Image. Sound (2020) and an MA from the interdisciplinary department POST (2023) at the Art Academy of Latvia. She further developed her practice through studies at KASK & Conservatorium (2019) and, as part of the ACADEMIA prize, completed a residency in London through the ACME Studios Early Career Programme. Her recent projects include the solo exhibitions Paper reCollection at Gallery 427 in Riga and Dowry Chest (((pure lady))) at kim? Contemporary Art Centre in Riga (2025); the duo exhibitions Field Record with Oto Holgers Ozoliņš at Forest Plinth in Augšmukti (2025) and Stardoll Heaven with Julie De Kezel at KOMPLOT in Brussels (2024); and the group exhibition Maladaptation at Przeciąg Gallery in Warsaw (2025). Earlier presentations include Groundwork at Kupfer Project Space in London, In the Name of Desire at the Latvian National Museum of Art in Riga (2024) and Sardines at Garage Gallery in Prague (2023). Malicka was nominated for the Annual Art Award of Latvia in 2025 and received the Linstow Art Award (2024) and the Helen Scott Lidgett Studio Award. She is part of the artist collectives PR0_Bi$TR0 and Latvānija.
