Introduction

The series began with Hedi Jaansoo’s growing habit of photographing various moments and compositions on the go, which seem special to her due to their human touch. For example, some giant plants in a public stairway. The plants were not ordered or asked to be there by anyone, on the contrary, they might even be discouraged sometimes. But many of us have some inner desire or habit to create a beautiful space or to improve, decorate, revive, expand the space where we live or work.

This particular photo was taken at the artist’s grandmother’s house in Finland, and the other settings depicted in the same series are also created by women. It’s a decision to take up and create space, and perhaps from an inner burning or inevitability that who else is doing these things. Still myself. Although we all want to feel a sense of home.

The work is part of the series Fringes, Edges, Roots and Corners, which was exhibited in the exhibition You, River curated by Annika Toots at the Kumu Art Museum in 2023, along with the work of Peeter Tooming and Endel Veliste.

About the artist

Hedi Jaansoo (1989) is an Estonian artist and a photographer based in Tallinn. She graduated from the Estonian Academy of Arts in Contemporary Art (MA, 2018), Photography (BA, 2014) and also studied at Bergen Academy of Art and Design (2012/13). She works with fragilities, weaknesses, tensions and beauties, among other – mainly small – things. Her recent work combines photography, flowers, non-functional jewellery, unfinished thoughts and uncertain decisions, (be)longing and acceptance. A common thread through most of her works is thinking of women, grandmothers, gentle acts of resistance and almost-invisibility. In 2023 she was an artist in residence at WIELS, Brussels. She is the project manager of Estonian Union of Photography Artists (FOKU) and FOKU gallery.
