Gathering at Kogo Auction on June 5th 2021

For the auction, Tanja Muravskaja donated 2 photos from her project „Garden Exile. The Tuglas’s Home Garden” (2016-2019), which was in 2019 as a site-specific installation presented in KUMU Estonian Art Museum’s exhibition “Garden Exile. The Tuglas Home Garden Through Tanja Muravskaja’s Camera Lens”. In the Under and Tuglas Literature Centre garden, the photo artist Tanja Muravskaja has searched for the Tuglases’ presence, the opportunity to escape in the garden, and the meaning of garden exile today. The artist has united documentary and poetic aspects of photography to study the photo representation of the garden of Elo and Friedebert Tuglas – now the Under and Tuglas Literary Center – the garden itself and the garden as a symbol.

About the artist

Tanja Murasvkaja (b. 1978, Pärnu, lives in Tallinn) is an artist, whose work proceeds from an analytic approach and psychological observation – be it the psychology of an individual, a society, or a place. In her artworks, she tackles such topics as identity and memory, as well as the relationships between society and its members. While focusing on photography, the medium’s qualities, and its agency in contemporary art, she creates installations, which evolve into total environments, embracing the viewer. Muravskaja studied photography at the Estonian Academy of Arts (2002–2010) and at the University of Westminster (2004–2005), and also journalism at Tallinn University before that. Her works are represented in the collections of the Art Museum of Estonia and the Tartu Art Museum. In 2018, Muravskaja received the Köler Prize Grand Prix awarded by the Contemporary Art Museum of Estonia. In 2019, Order of the White Star Fifth Class was bestowed on her. From January to June 2020, she was a resident at the WIELS – Centre for Contemporary Art in Brussels, Belgium.

The Tuglas Home Garden Through Tanja Muravskaja’s Camera Lens (Kumu Art Museum, 2019), Three Sisters: Tanja Muravskaja (Tensta Konsthall, 2019), participation in the Art Encounters Biennial (Timișoara, 2019) and in the Gothenburg International Biennial for Contemporary Art Somewhere in Between (Borås Konstmuseum, 2019), Viral Self-Portraits.
